2 Steps You Can Take to Become the Spiritual Leader of Your Home

As a parent have you ever considered yourself a pastor? How about the spiritual leader of your home?
It seems, in general, many parents abdicate their role as spiritual leader in the home. Instead, they lean on the church, local youth group, or other mentors to train up their children.
Sadly, because of today’s culture, teens need their parents now more than ever; yet, their parents are more elusive and distant than ever.
So, how do you become the spiritual head of your home?
Integrity is Priority Number 1
First you must remain steadfast in integrity. Compromising truth should never be an option, no matter how uncomfortable it is. If your teen sees that your words are dishonest, you will create a tremendous amount of insecurity in his/her life.
We often tell our parents at Shepherds Hill Academy that it takes a lifetime to earn trust and a second to lose it.
No matter how difficult the circumstance, always be honest!
The reality is that truth is something young people are yearning for. Today’s teens rarely see truth from their authority figure.
Do Your Actions Align with Your Words
Second, to become the spiritual leader of your home, your actions must align with your words.
It doesn’t matter how many times you lecture your child, if you don’t practice what you preach, your child won’t be able to take you serious.
Think of this, how many leaders have we admired only to find out years later that he/she was involved in some form of a sin-filled duplicitous lifestyle?
Did his words resonated louder, or, was it his moral corruption? The same is true with your kid. Your actions will be scrutinized. In the end, will they align with your words?
Take Your Spiritual Temperature
So, let me leave you with this. What is your spiritual temperature?
To be “hot” is to be focused on your personal spiritual life. To be “cold” is to lack the spiritual discipline needed to lead your family.
Do you read, study and memorize the scriptures? Does your family attend church regularly? Do you initiate prayer time and devotions in your family? Do your actions align with your words? Do you compromise truth? Answering these questions can help you know your spiritual temperature.
